Sears Garage Door Opener 139.655000 Digital Control

Sears Garage Door Opener 139.655000

The Sears 1/3 garage door opener 139.655000 with digital control debuted in the 1970’s. The machine is a 1/3 horsepower chain drive opener that featured a digital control wall station and transmitter at a price of $174.99 – with the 1/2 horsepower version at $194.99. Sears also offered a 1/4 model for $154.99

These machines were built to last with many still in use today despite being 50 years old. Manufactured by The Chamberlain Group, these operators were made private label for Sears & Roebuck.

Since these openers were manufactured prior to 1993 they do not have modern safety features and should be replaced. Chamberlain ended support for all pre 1993 openers in 2008, making older units obsolete.

Chamberlain also discontinued the chassis, bolt pattern and chain length in the early 1980’s. That made modern openers completely incompatible with the rail and head units.

If your drive gear strips out the only option is to have a 3d printed gear printed.

Transmitter Model 139.654031 – The remote takes a 9V battery. It programs to the wall control through a series of 9 dip-switches. The carrier frequency is usually “Y” or “S”. If you are able to find an old replacement remote this frequency letter identifier must match what you have.

Digital Wall Control 139.654021 – The wood grain colored wall station features a built in receiver. Low voltage wiring running from the back of the opener to the wall control provides power. The cover can be taken off to reveal internal components including 9 dip-switches that should be matched with your transmitter.

If you lose your remote or it stops working, replacement transmitters are very hard to find. The best option is to get a Chamberlain Liftmaster external plug in receiver like the 365LM and a universal remote like the 380UT.

Genie also makes a universal receiver and remote kit. Universal remotes alone are not compatible without an external receiver.

To adjust the travel limits you will need to take the case off as these units do not have external controls that can be adjusted with a flathead screwdriver from the outside. Make sure you unplug the opener before making any adjustments. There are two 4 3/8″ screws that have to be loosened. Then you can adjust the set plate and turn the bottom limit.. The plate must be tightened down before you run the opener.
